New Haven's "Lost Crooner"

Santamauro was poised to hit the big time himself. Playing Vegas regularly, hanging out with Rocky Marciano and even rubbing elbows with Elvis Presley (to the point of Presley recording a song Mara had just recorded), the New Haven-raised Italian-American crooner - with fan mail pouring in - walked away from it all once his beloved father passed, to care for his mother back here in the Elm City.

He did revisit his glory days, however, in the late 90's, after being dubbed "The Lost Crooner" in the local press, cutting a new record, and playing out for the first time in decades.

Mara passed this weekend at 85.
