There are some dogs that have an uncanny ability to smile. Twinkie is one such girl. She literally grins at the camera, reflecting her very sweet personality. She is a lab mix at about 17 months old. She weighs about 40 pounds. Like most lab mixes she loves to play and run, burning off her energy. If she’s not playing with her favorite toy, then Twinkie wants to spend time with her human friends because she loves to be around people. And of course, that will bring on her grin! Twinkie also loves playing with her doggy friends. She would be most successful being placed in a forever home with another resident dog (or if you’re looking to adopt Twinkie and another Dog Star!). She was found by an animal control officer and taken to a shelter, but no one ever came to claim her. Since being in her Connecticut foster home, Twinkie is learning how to be a dog. She is part of a pack of five other dogs, eating, sleeping, hanging out, and hiking. All in peaceful harmony. Twinkie's CT foster dad says, "She is really doing great at my house as a foster dog. Jessy and Twink play a lot - all fun and appropriate. Twinkie makes great eye contact, knows right from wrong, wants to please and now knows some basic commands. She is great in the car and has been going with me to a number of stores- where she’s very calm and if asked, greets strangers with a smile and a wagging tail. I think this was Twinkie’s first snow. Initially she wouldn’t go out the door but when she did she loved it.” With training and socialization, Twinkie will continue blossoming into a very sweet girl. She still needs a little time to warm up to a new dog, but soon becomes its best friend and starts to play. She would be happiest in a forever home with another dog (or two). She enjoys playing and looks to her canine companions for social cues. Twinkie does not do well around other barking, reactive dogs, however. Our Dog Star volunteers have been working with Twinkie on leash training skills. She has been making good progress. She is completely house trained. She is not crate trained. According to her foster dad, Twinkie has been successful staying home not crated while he runs errands. Twinkie will need to continue to be trained by someone who has the patience, energy and time to provide her with the right guidance. At this time, Twinkie would be most successful in a forever home with adults and older children. Twinkie will thrive in a home that can give her the attention and affection she so deserves. In return she will become a devoted lifelong companion. If you are the family for Twinkie, continue reading! The fee for adoption is $450. This includes spay/neuter, vaccinations and transport fees.
