Deepfake Of Queen Elizabeth Will Deliver 'Alternative' Christmas Address

Audiences at Buckingham Palace

Moments after Queen Elizabeth II delivers her annual Christmas address, a deepfake version of the Queen will deliver an "alternative" message to the people of the United Kingdom.

The five-minute message will air on Channel 4 and feature a digital doppelganger of Queen Elizabeth speaking about sensitive topics, including the departure of Harry and Meghan from the royal family and Prince Andrew's history with Jeffrey Epstein. The video will also feature the "Queen" doing a TikTok dance.

The voice of the deepfake will be dubbed by British actress Debra Stephenson.

Nicholas Witchell, the royal correspondent for the BBC, said he was not impressed after watching a short clip of the address.

"There have been countless imitations of the Queen. This isn't a particularly good one," he said. "The voice sounds what it is - a rather poor attempt to impersonate her. What makes it troubling is the use of video technology to attempt to sync her lips to the words being spoken."

Channel 4 said they are airing the deepfake address as a "stark warning" about the prevalence of fake news. Ian Katz, the channel's director of programming, told The Guardian that the video is "a powerful reminder that we can no longer trust our own eyes."

Buckingham Palace has refused to comment about the broadcast.
