An armed man was detained after he pulled a gun on a pastor at a church in Pennsylvania on Sunday (May 5). The Pennsylvania State Police said that 26-year-old Bernard Junior Polite stood up during Sunday's service at Jesus' Dwelling Place Church in North Braddock and pulled a gun on Pastor Glenn Germany.

When Polite pulled the trigger, the gun jammed and failed to fire.

"I started to preach, and all of a sudden, from my left-hand side, I saw him move from the back to the front of the church, and he set up in the front corner of the church and smiled at me," Germany told WTAE. All of a sudden, I just saw a gun pointing right at me. And at that point, all I could try to do is run for cover."

As Germany and many of the parishioners ran for cover, several people tackled Polite and managed to take away his gun.

"He could have lost his life in that struggle," Germany said of the man who tackled Polite. "But he sacrificed himself for everyone, and he's the hero."

When Polite was taken to jail, he told officers, "God told him to do it." He was charged with attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and recklessly endangering another person.

Later that night, officers searched Polite's home and found the body of 56-year-old Derek Polite. Investigators said he was shot to death but did not say how Bernard and Derek were related. Bernard has not been charged in relation to the body found at his home.
