UPS is disposing of thousands of U.S.-bound packages due to new customs requirements imposed by President Donald Trump's administration. These packages are stuck at hubs across the country, unable to clear the complex customs process, as reported by NBC News. The disposal of shipments has left many UPS customers frustrated, waiting weeks for packages and receiving conflicting tracking updates.

The issue stems from the revocation of the "de minimis" tariff exemption, which previously allowed packages valued at $800 or less to enter the United States duty-free. Now, these packages face various tariffs and fees, including country-specific rates and new levies on certain products. This change has made international shipping to the U.S. more complex and costly, affecting both private individuals and experienced exporters.

Matthew Wasserbach, brokerage manager of Express Customs Clearance, described the situation as "totally unprecedented," noting a significant increase in inquiries for help with UPS customs clearance. One customer, Ashley Freberg, shared her experience of missing packages that were reportedly "disposed of" by UPS after failing to clear customs.

The new customs regulations have created a "customs conundrum," leading some consumers to avoid international purchases altogether. As the backlog grows, UPS and its customers continue to navigate these challenging circumstances.
