History
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford is the birthplace of the nationwide Boys & Girls Club movement.
The country’s first Club, the Dashaway Club, was founded in Hartford in 1860 when four women, Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin, Elizabeth Hammersley and Louisa Bushnell, believed that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive, healthy place to live and grow.
From its humble beginnings, Boys & Girls Clubs has grown to become the largest youth organization in America, serving more than 4.2 million young people in over 4,000 clubs nationwide.
Today, nearly 160 years later, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford still builds the values, character and and skills our youth need to succeed in in the 21st Century. We provide academic assistance, leadership development, access to technology and exposure to colleges and careers to build GREAT Futures.
As the premier youth development organization in Hartford, we touch the lives of nearly 1 in every 3 children in Hartford Public Schools.
Through membership and community outreach, we serve more than 10,000 youth annually through programs focused on academic enrichment, character and leadership development and healthy lifestyles.
